Hello beauties! It’s been way too long since we’ve last connected, so I decided to “go big or go home” with this post. As you’ve probably noticed, Summer is well on its way. Which can only mean one thing… (Besides beaches, s’mores and tanlines, that is) … We need some fun summer projects!! I always make a summer to-do list of either fun things I need to try, books I need to read, food I need to eat and so on… So here’s a fun day project that you and a friend can do together! THRIFTING!
I absolutely love a good date with The thrift shop, and I don’t mean Macklemore. Its such a fun, relaxing way to be creative and get some much needed retail therapy without the usual retail therapy price.
Thrift shopping can be pretty taboo for some people, and that is totally understandable. But if you’re looking to be more adventurous or creative, I’ve compiled some strategic tips for thrifting 101.
1. Keep an open mind.
Quite often when we go shopping we have an end goal in mind. I know I do. I plan out what I’m looking for, what I need most so I don’t get too distracted by all the other pretty things on the shelves. I’ll make a special trip to the mall just to find a pair of jeans or shoes. However, when it comes to thrifting, it’s an entirely different ball game. You never know what kind of treasure you’re going to find. So when I venture into a thrift store, I try not to have any expectations. I get my creative juices flowing and I have fun with the endless possibilities.
2. It maybe second hand but…
Does it look second hand? Buying clothing secondhand usually has a negative assosiations. Often people assume that secondhand clothing is dirty or outdated. I get such a thrill out of fooling people. Finding a diamond in the rough that looks brand new! The trick is to stay away from garments that look worn and torn. (Unless you’re searching for distressed denim of course).
3. It’s all in the details.
The beauty of thrift shopping is that you never know what you’ll get. And to prevent myself from getting to overwhelmed by options, I search for things that have unique qualities. I look for fun or different patterns, unusual textures, embellishments and so on. These are the querky details that make a garment stand out. I stay away from the simple items I could easily find at any retailer and I look for that one item that I would never be able to find anywhere else.
4. Creativity is key
The most fun part of thrift shopping is taking a garment, and totally reworking it into something amazing. Maybe with a sewing machine, or a glue gun, shortening the hem, sleeves or maybe just adding a belt! This makes the hunt all the more satisfying. Taking somebody’s throw-always and transforming them into a one of a kind treasure!
5. No restrictions!
Finally, when thrifting it is so important that you don’t restrict yourself! Be free! Explore! This means checking out the men’s sections, experimenting with different sizing. In the end, it is all about what you feel best in. If you find something that inspires you, have confidence working it. Remember that you have your own unique eye for style! Embrace it!
Much love friends! Happy June! Beccs x
